December 24, 2017 • 4th Sunday of AdventSunday Readings: 2 Samuel 7:1–5, 8b–12, 14a, 16; Romans 16:25–27; Luke 1:26–38For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundIn this Sunday’s Gospel, the angel Gabriel speaks to Mary, asking her to become the Mother of God. Mary’s willingness to do God’s will brings Jesus into the world as our brother and Savior. Mary’s yes to God is an act of faith. In Jesus, God becomes Emmanuel, “God with us.”Connecting Scripture and DoctrineThe story of Our Lady of Guadalupe also tells of a heavenly being appearing to a lowly human person. Mary has passed on the favor shown her by God. She now shows God’s face to us today.“In the fullness of time the Holy Spirit completes in Mary all the preparations for Christ’s coming among the People of God. By the action of the Holy Spirit in her, the Father gives the world Emmanuel, ‘God-with-us’ (Matthew 1:23)” (CCC, 744).“At the announcement that she would give birth to ‘the Son of the Most High’ without knowing man, by the power of the Holy Spirit, Mary responded with the obedience of faith, certain that ‘with God nothing will be impossible’.... She gave herself entirely to the person and to the work of her Son” (CCC, 494). See also CCC, 509–511, 721–725, 1156.NOTE: If your Good News class will not meet for Sunday, January 7, be sure to give the children the Christmas and Epiphany lesson to take home.
