Isaiah’s words of comfort to the exiled Israelites assure them and us that we can count on God to forgive us.In Sunday’s Gospel, John the Baptist echoes Isaiah’s words, telling people to prepare for someone powerful and good who is coming. “Be ready for him,” John says and points to Jesus, the one who will come and bring God’s loving forgiveness among us. The words of both Isaiah and John the Baptist call us to become more forgiving and loving as Jesus taught.Connecting Scripture and DoctrineChildren have experiences of preparing for someone or something, of shaping up their behavior, of having to wait. Good News invites them to re ect on these experiences in order to understand better the waiting and getting ready themes of the season of Advent.“St. John the Baptist is the Lord’s immediate precursor or forerunner, sent to prepare his way. ‘Prophet of the Most High,’ John surpasses all the prophets, of whom he is the last” (CCC, 523).“In John, the precursor, the Holy Spirit completes the work of ‘[making] ready a people prepared for the Lord’” (CCC, 718, citing Luke 1:17).
