November 5, 2017 • 31st Sunday in Ordinary TimeSunday Readings: Malachi 1:14—2.2, 8–10; 1 Thessalonians 2:7–9, 13; Matthew 23:1–12For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundIn Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus surprises us by reversing common thinking about who is great in the eyes of God. Jesus insists that those who serve are more important that those who gain honor and important positions. In Jesus’ time, the latter group included religious people who wore tassels and took the highest places at table.Connecting Scripture and DoctrineThe vocation of priests, deacons, and married couples comes is similar—they have committed their lives to service. The Sacraments of Holy Orders and Matrimony are directed towards the salvation of others. “They confer a particular mission in the Church and serve to build up the People of God.” (CCC, 1534) “The ministerial priesthood differs in essence from the priesthood of the faithful because it confers a sacred power for the service of the faithful.” (CCC, 1592) The ordained ministry is conferred and exercised in three degrees: bishops, presbyters, and deacons (CCC, 1593). Spouses “are called to grow continually in their communion through day-to-day fidelity to their marriage promise of total mutual self-giving” (CCC, 1644). Note: All numbered citations are from the Catechism of the Catholic Church unless otherwise indicated. This week’s article, “Never Too Young to Lead,” explores how a group of young leaders from Camden, New Jersey, reclaimed a park for their community. The young people will understand the difference between doing charitable works and working for social change.Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions on how to present the lesson.
