October 8, 2017 • 27th Sunday in Ordinary TimeSunday Readings: Isaiah 5:1–7; Philippians 4:6–9; Matthew 21:33–43For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundSunday’s Gospel so closely parallels Jesus’ life that it is more of an allegory than a parable. The plot and characters in an allegory but also refer to real events and people in history. What should a vineyard owner do with tenants who beat and kill his servants, want to keep the whole grape harvest, and then kill his son to claim the son’s inheritance? When Jesus asks the chief priests and elders that question, they say to get rid of the murderous tenants and find fruitful ones. Jesus wants them to take their own advice and fruitfully care for the people, especially for the poor and sick who sought out Jesus in the Temple after he chased out the sellers and money changers.Connecting Scripture and DoctrineThis Sunday’s Gospel continues Jesus’message from last week: Actions are more important than words. Now we are called to choose right actions. Seeking the Kingdom of Heaven must be an active choice. “Jesus’ invitation to enter his kingdom comes in the form of parables, a characteristic feature of his teaching. Through his parables he invites people to the feast of the kingdom, but he also asks for a radical choice: to gain the kingdom, one must give everything. Words are not enough; deeds are required.” (CCC, 546) Note: All numbered citations are from the Catechism of the Catholic Church unless otherwise indicated.Like the vineyard tenants, we have choices about how to live our lives fruitfully. Visions explores the difficulties involved in choosing to live up to the responsibilities teens face today. The young people will also learn strategies to deal with all types of social pressure.Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions for how to present the lesson.
