October 1, 2017 • 26th Sunday in Ordinary TimeSunday Readings: Ezekiel 18:25–28; Philippians 2:1–11; Matthew 21:28–32For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundThe vineyard in Sunday’s Gospel symbolizes the people of Israel. Jesus tells the chief priests and elders a parable about a father who asks his two sons to work in his vineyard. Symbolically, this means to care for God’s people. The first son refuses to help but changes his mind and does. The second son agrees to help but doesn’t follow through. The parable challenges the chief priests and elders to follow through like the first son and care for the people, especially those who are poor or sick. Jesus wants them to believe in him and his message as many tax collectors and prostitutes do.Connecting Scripture and DoctrineJesus is the master teacher, presenting his message in ways everyone can understand. “The whole of Christ’s life was a continual teaching: his silences, his miracles, his gestures, his prayer, his love for people, his special affection for the little and the poor, his acceptance of the total sacrifice on the Cross for the redemption of the world, and his Resurrection are the actualization of his word and the fulfillment of Revelation.”(#561) Note: All numbered citations are from the Catechism of the Catholic Church unless otherwise indicated.Sunday’s Gospel story of the two sons shows us both the importance of keeping our word and of changing choices we regret. Venture encourages children to follow the example of the first son who is willing to re-evaluate his choice, to change, and then to live out his new decision.Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions on how to present the lesson.
