WHAT THE CHURCH BELIEVES AND TEACHES HANDBOOKWhat the Church Believes and TeachesKnowing and Living Your Faith (page 4)September 24, 2017 • 25th Sunday in Ordinary TimeRemind the children that they will review these faith words at the end of the eight-week unit. Our Catholic Faith l Why does Jesus use parables to teach? (page 5) Venture-age children study forms of literature in their language arts classes in school. Parables are a biblical form that Jesus used in his teaching. Read the page aloud as a group. There are discussion questions within the text that will help children tell what they have just learned. Tell the children that the next three Sunday Gospel readings are parables.Distribute the children’s What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks.Saints l Saint Francis Xavier (page 6) Venture presents the lives of the saints in comic format. Allow time to enjoy the stories in class when possible. Consider displaying the saint pages on a bulletin board where other classes and perhaps parishioners will see them. Ask the children if they know another famous Francis. Remind them that Pope Francis is also a Jesuit, the order founded by Saint Francis Xavier and Saint Ignatius of Loyola.Living the Gospel l Our Class Is God’s Vineyard (page 7) This activity will help your Venture class create a community in which every member feels welcome, secure, and able to learn and grow in their Catholic faith. Have the children number off by fours to form groups. Provide scissors for each group. Read aloud the instructions on page 7 before the groups begin work. When groups are ready, gather as a class to make a poster listing your class’s ground rules for the year. Plan to display the poster every time you meet.Closing Prayer l Vineyard Prayer (page 8) Gather the children in the prayer space. If permitted, light a candle.Have tape available to secure the grapevines and grapes tothe classroom doorway. In the upcoming lessons this fall, the children will add to this visual commitment to work together as a community of learning about Jesus.Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families and to do the With My Family and Friends activities and prayer together.Lesson Wrap-UpThe NEW Gospel WeekliesThe NEW Gospel WeekliesPFLAUM GOSPEL WEEKLIES Faith Formation ProgramPFLAUM GOSPEL WEEKLIES Faith Formation ProgramRead the title at the top of page 4. Ask four volunteers to read the letter aloud, each taking a different paragraph as the rest of the group follows along in their books. Summarize by calling out the following key words from the letter and asking the children what they mean to them: Jesus, beliefs, actions, knowledge, faith, prayer. Accept their answers.Turn back to the Table of Contents. You will find the same words, plus the word celebrate. These are the main divisions of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, on which the children’s handbooks are based. In these four divisions, the Catechism recognizes Catholics as people who believe (creed), celebrate (sacraments), act (Christian living), and pray. You will begin to explore the Believe section in next week’s lesson.Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Venture, page 5.Live the GospelObjectives l The children will:l Learn about 16th-century Saint Francis Xavier, patron of missions.l Identify ways they grow as individuals and ways they can grow as a class.November 12, 201732nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Year AWith My Family and FriendsAnswer the following questions based on the lesson.1.
