September 24, 2017 • 25th Sunday in Ordinary TimeSunday Readings: Isaiah 55:6–9; Philippians 1:20–24, 27; Matthew 20:1–16aFor Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundWelcome to Venture! Venture begins the 2017–18 year by focusing on the last Sunday Gospels of Lectionary Cycle A, all from Matthew 20–22. In these chapters, Jesus teaches daily in the Temple, often in parables. He confronts scribes, Pharisees, Temple priests, and elders. Jesus’ parables invite his opponents to judge themselves—and he invites us to do the same. This Sunday, Jesus’ parable unsettles a listener today just as it unsettled the priests and elders when Jesus first told it. A vineyard owner pays workers hired for only an hour’s work the same day’s wage as those hired at dawn. To heighten the injustice, those hired last receive their wage first, leading those who worked all day to expect more. But this story is not really about wages. It’s about God’s love, which abounds for all of us.Connecting Scripture and DoctrineThe Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us that God reveals himself to Israel as “abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness” (CCC, 214). Further, God’s love for Israel is greater than a father’s love for his son or a mother’s love for her children or a groom’s love for his beloved (CCC, 219). As John’s Gospel makes clear, “God’s very being is love” (CCC, 221). Note: All numbered citations are from the Catechism of the Catholic Church unless otherwise indicated. In the story “What Is Fair?” the children will reflect on their own experience of doing family chores. It’s likely they will identify with the laborers in the Gospel story who worked all day in the hot sun. The lesson activities invite them to get to know one another and set class goals, to reflect on Jesus’ parable, and to celebrate their coming together as a learning community.Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions on how to present the lesson.
