WHAT THE CHURCH BELIEVES AND TEACHES HANDBOOKWhat the Church Believes and TeachesHoly Orders (page 25) Matrimony (page 26)November 5, 2017 • 31st Sunday in Ordinary TimeDistribute the children’s What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks.Marriage is a unique sacrament. The couple serves as the ministers, not the priest or deacon; he serves as the witness and the representative of the Church. The couple’s promises are the sign that grace is coming to them because of their union. Read the copy in the circle and discuss how the children might respond.Move to page 7, and read this copy aloud. The sign of this Sacrament is the laying on of hands, when the bishop gives the priests the power to build up the Church by preaching and the sacraments. Help the children see ways their local priests and deacons serve their parishioners and the larger community. Give the children time to complete the items in the circle.Catholic Faith Word l Salvation (page 7) Readthe definition aloud. Ask the children to explain how priests save others. Priests can offer absolution for sins through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which returns people to a right relationship with God. Deacons can inspire people return to God and believe. Married couples raise children to be close to God. Healthy families can be a good example of Christian love to others, which could inspire conversion.KidTalk l What famous person do you admire for his/her service to others? (page 8) Read the question and the children’s responses together. Ask your children who they might add to the list and why.Closing Prayer l The Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi This well-known prayer actually offers a perfect model for leadership. Over and over, the prayer calls us to offer the positive response in an otherwise negative situation. For example, “Where there is hatred, let me sow love.”The prayer is printedon page 56 in the children’s catechism handbooks. Read it aloud together to close your Venture class.Lesson Wrap-UpThe NEW Gospel WeekliesThe NEW Gospel WeekliesPFLAUM GOSPEL WEEKLIES Faith Formation ProgramPFLAUM GOSPEL WEEKLIES Faith Formation ProgramRead aloud paragraph 1 on page 25, which identifies the three degrees of Holy Orders.
