The greatest is the one who serves, Jesus says, not the one who looks best or takes the first place.Connecting Scripture and DoctrineThe goal of catechesis is to “bring about in the believer an ever more mature faith in Jesus Christ, a deeper knowledge and love of his person and message, and a firm commitment to follow him. With God’s grace, catechesis develops initial faith, nourishes the Christian life, and continually unfolds the mystery of Christ until the believer willingly becomes his disciple” (National Directory for Catechesis #19.A). “The sacraments of Holy Orders and Matrimony are directed towards the salvation of others... They confer a particular mission in the Church and serve to build up the People of God.”(CCC, 1534) Note: All numbered citations are from the Catechism of the Catholic Church unless otherwise indicated.Jesus teaches us that no one but God is our Father and calls us to be a community of equals and friends, not a community in which some dominate others. Middle-grade children’s strong sense of fairness helps them recognize people who misuse power or who don’t practice what they preach. However, identifying hypocrisy in themselves is more difficult for children—just as it is for adults. Venture helps middle graders reshape their ideas of leadership and appreciate Jesus’ definition of real greatness as service to others.l Venture Student Lesson for 11/5l Catechism handbook, pages 25–26 l CD player and Venture/Visions CDsl Bible, cloth, candle, matches/lighter, pencils/pensSuggested Musicl “We Are Called” (CD-2, #12)l “Word of Truth and Life” (CD-1, #1)Lesson Resourcesl Venture Activity Book, Activity #20 l Lesson Assessment(gospelweeklies.com/ teacherresources)Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions on how to present the lesson.
