Begin by o ering a concern of your own. Close by saying, “Dear God, you bring us peace when we are troubled. We love you. Amen.”Activity l Jesus Has One Rule (page 1) Distribute Venture. Have the children identify the person at the top left as a teacher of the Law of Moses who is challenging Jesus to choose the most important law. Read Jesus’ response aloud together. Then read the directions in each of the four letters and give the children time to at least begin the activity. Assign the remainder as homework.Article l Swish for Kids (pages 2-3) Gather in a story circle. Ask the children to read the title of the article on page 2 and examine the photos. What do they notice? A lot of big basketball players are playing with a lot of little kids. They are helping the kids learn basketball skills. Read the  rst section aloud to the children to set the stage for the article. Read the rest of the article aloud, with a di erent child taking each paragraph, or assign pairs of weak and strong readers to read it aloud together.Take plenty of time with the Think questions. Answers: 1. A boy from St. Ephrem died of cancer. The school and parish wanted to raise money to fight cancer. 2. Theythink the kids are braver and stronger than they are. 3. Frankie loved basketball and practically lived in the gym. 4. They like having fun, learning a new skill, feeling healthy enough to run and play. 5. As you prepare the children to listen to this Sunday’s Gospel, play “Word of Truth and Life” (CD-1, #1).Catholic Faith Word l Law (page 4) Introduce this Sunday’s Gospel message by reading the definition of law. Remind the children about last week’s lesson, in which they learned they are both citizens and Catholics. Both groups have laws we must follow.Sunday Gospel l What Are the Greatest Commandments? (page 4) Assign four children the parts of Narrator, Pharisee, and Jesus 1 and 2. Give them a moment to find their parts. Ask the children who are not reading parts to put down their Venture lessons and listen. Have the children proclaim the Gospel. Then ask the listeners to retell it to you in their own words before turning to the Think questions.Discuss the Think questions. Answers: 1. Loving God with all one’s heart, soul, and mind and loving one’s neighbor as oneself. Jesus takes these twocommandments out of Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18 and interlocks them, saying that one cannot be thought of without the other. 2. Our neighbors include family, strangers, friends, all people of the world. 3. Open-ended.Connecting Gospel and Doctrine l Jesus CallsUstoLove(page4) JesusgivesthePharisees a simple challenge in response to their tricky question—love God and love your neighbor. He also called out the people who make great shows of piety, but may or may not show love to others. Read the doctrine together and then give the children time to reflect the Think questions. Provide paper so they may journal their responses.
