October 29, 2017 • 30th Sunday in Ordinary TimeSunday Readings: Exodus 22:20–26;1 Thessalonians 1:5–10; Matthew 22:34–40For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundThe first five books of the Bible—Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy—contain the many stories and 613 laws that form the Law of Moses. Jews call these books the Torah. The Law of Moses includes the simple absolute statements of the Ten Commandments—you shall have no other gods before me, and you shall not kill, steal, or bear false witness. The Law of Moses also contains collections of case laws, legal precedents that accumulated as people applied the absolute law to concrete situations in their own lives and time. The Pharisees’ question in Sunday’s Gospel asks Jesus to identify the most important law. Jesus’ answer to the Pharisees teaches that love is the greatest commandment—love of God and love of neighbor as oneself. In his life, Death, and Resurrection Jesus shows us in action our own value as human beings and the importance of treating others with the respect and love they deserve.Connecting Scripture and DoctrineJesus’ New Law ful lls the Law of the Old Testament. “The Ten Commandments state what is required in the love of God and love of neighbor.” (CCC, 2067) Jesus summed up our duties toward God by saying: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” (CCC, 2083). The foundation of all law is love and respect: “Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the ful lling of the law” (CCC, 2196).
