Those hired last receive their wages first, leading those who worked all day to expect more.Connecting Scripture and DoctrineThe Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us that God reaches out to Israel in “sheer gratuitous love” (218). God’s love for Israel is greater than a father’s love for his son, a mother’s love for her children, or a groom’s love for his beloved (219). As John’s Gospel makes clear, “God’s very being is love” (221).“‘Liturgy’ originally meant a ‘public work’ or a ‘service in the name of/on behalf of the people.’ In Christian tradition it means the participation of the People of God in ‘the work of God.’ Through the liturgy Christ, our redeemer and high priest, continues the work of our redemption in, with, and through his Church” (CCC, 1069).“‘The liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; it is also the font from which all her power flows.’ It is therefore the privileged place for catechizing the People of God” (CCC, 1074, citing Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 10).Good News uses Matthew’s image of the vineyard and the choices people make to bring the message of God’s abundant love to the children. In this lesson and during their Good News year, the children will learn to practice love and compassion in their families, with their friends, and in school and playground interactions.l Good News Student Lesson for 9/24l Catechism handbook, pages 9–11l CD player and Promise/Good News CD-2 l Pencils, crayons, scissors, Bible, tape orpushpins, poster board (optional)Suggested Musicl “Yes, Lord, I Believe” (CD-2, #26) l “God’s Love Is...” (CD-2, #6)l “Gospel Acclamation” (CD-2, #24) l “Come and Follow Me” (CD-2, #14)Lesson Resourcesl Good News Activity Book, Activity #21 l Lesson Assessment (gospelweeklies.com/teacherresources)Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions for how to present the lesson.
