November 12, 2017 • 32nd Sunday in Ordinary TimeSunday Readings: Wisdom 6:12–16; 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18; Matthew 25:1–13For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundThe last Sundays of the Church year and the First Sunday of Advent have a common theme—being ready for Jesus’ Second Coming. When the early Christians remembered stories Jesus had told, stories such as the one we hear this Sunday about the wise and foolish virgins, they heard the call to be ready to stand with the Lord at his return. The first generation of Christians expected Jesus to return in their lifetimes. But, like the wedding party in the Gospel, Jesus’ coming is delayed. This Gospel calls us all to be ready to meet Jesus as he comes to us in our daily lives. By doing this, we will also be ready for his Second Coming. In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells a parable about 10 girls, five, who wisely bring extra oil for their small lamps as they wait for a bridegroom to come for his bride, and five who don’t. In Jesus’ time, negotiating the dowry made the groom’s arrival time for a marriage feast unpredictable. The five foolish girls should have known that their small lamps could not hold enough oil if the groom was delayed.Connecting Scripture and Doctrine“Catechesis for school-age children presents [Jesus’] teaching, his ministry, and major events of his life. Children can begin to appreciate the parables of Jesus and capture glimpses of the Kingdom of God” (NDC, 48E.2). See also CCC, 1732–34.Good News considers prayer as a primary means of acknowledging God’s presence in our daily lives—and for being ready for his return.Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions for how to present the lesson.
