Thank you for teaching us how to be happy and how to love another and love God. Please bless us today.” The children respond, “Amen.”Activity l Who Will Help? (page 1) Move to the work area. The children will need a place to write. Distribute Good News. Read aloud together the cover title. Give the children a minute to study the illustrations, then ask: What kind of help do the mother and the baby need? Someone to comfort the baby, to clean up the spill, to stir the pot. Read aloud the text on the bottom right. Distribute pencils or crayons so the children can put a HelperKid logo on the shirt of the child if they think he or she will help. They can put the logo with a “No” symbol (as shown) on the shirt if they think the child will not help. Ask: What will HelperKid do to help?Give the children time to study the other two illustrations and make choices. When everyone has finished, discuss these two situations. Try to let the children do the talking. They will teach each other, and you will learn a great deal about how they approach decision-making.Story l Adam’s Monday (page 2) Ask seven children to each read a panel of the cartoon story.Read the two Know questions that relate to the story. Ask: What does serve means? Serving others is helping them. Go back and talk about the opportunitiesAdam has to serve. Take one panel at a time. The children will have many ideas about what is going on and what Adam can do to help.Catholic Faith Word l Serve (page 3) Review the meaning of this word. Make sure the children understand that serving others is an important part of following Jesus. Tell them that they will hear what Jesus says about serving in today’s Gospel.Discover Gospel and DoctrineObjective The children will name people who serve them in school and parish.Have the children bring their copies of Good News to the Gospel area and sit in a circle. Sing “Gospel Acclamation” (CD-2, #24).Sunday Gospel l Jesus Teaches Us to Serve (page 3) Assign children to read the parts of Narrator and Jesus 1, 2, 3, and 4. (Make sure the children understand that there is really only one Jesus. What he says in this Gospel is just being shared by four different readers.) Give the readers a moment to silently read through the Gospel. Then invite the others to stand for the proclamation of the Gospel.Ask the children the Know questions related to the Gospel. Ask the first question and allow the children to answer. They will probably name Jesus’ disciples, especially the Twelve Apostles. Remind them that many men and women followed Jesus and that all who imitated him in serving others were important.Ask the second question and accept all answers. Be sure the children include themselves and their families among those who are important when they help and serve others.Connecting Gospel and Doctrine (page 3) Read together “Serving Others.” Ask: What are some other ways you can serve others at home, at school, at church, and in your neighborhood?Play and sing the song “Serving Each Other” (CD-1, #19) to summarize the Gospel message.Distribute the children’s What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks.Teaching This Week’s LessonWHAT THE CHURCH BELIEVES AND TEACHES HANDBOOKWhat the Church Believes and TeachesPraise and Celebrate: Sunday, Feast Days (page 20)Draw from the children’s life experiences of what makes Sunday a special day for their families.
