The Pharisees appear again in Sunday’s Gospel. Pharisees were the respected teachers of the Mosaic Law in Jesus’ time. Jesus acknowledges their place in the Jewish community as teachers of the Mosaic Law but criticizes them for not practicing the love and humility they preach.Instead, Jesus gives us a new rule about being important. The person who is important in Jesus’ eyes is the one who serves other people. Jesus not only gave us this teaching in words, but he also showed it in his life. At the Last Supper, Jesus knelt down and washed the feet of his disciples. Then he said, “As I have done for you, you should also do” (John 13:15). Jesus’ whole life, not only his Death, was an outpouring of himself for those he loved.Connecting Scripture and Doctrine“Catechesis is enriched when the word of God shines forth in the life of the Church, especially in the lives of the saints and in the Christian witness of the faithful” (NDC, 18).“Catechesis aims to bring about in the believer an ever more mature faith in Jesus Christ, a deeper knowledge and love of his person and message, and a firm commitment to follow him.... With God’s grace, catechesis develops initial faith, nourishes the Christian life, and continually unfolds the mystery of Christ until the believer willingly becomes his disciple” (NDC, 19A). See also CCC, 1822–23.Primary children are very aware of their rights and do not take easily to serving each other. Their respect for the loved and trusted adults in their lives can, however, set them on the path of service, which is the mark of the Christian.l Good News Student Lesson for 11/5 l Catechism handbook, page 20l CD player and Promise/Good News CDs l pencils and crayons, saint books forchildren.Suggested Musicl “Gospel Acclamation” (CD-2, #24) l “Serving Each Other” (CD-1, #19) l “Saints” (CD-2, #22)Lesson Resourcesl Good News Activity Book, Activity #28 l Lesson Assessment (gospelweeklies.com/teacherresources)Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions for how to present the lesson.
