WHAT THE CHURCH BELIEVES AND TEACHES HANDBOOKWhat the Church Believes and TeachesFollow Jesus: Sin, Virtues (page 30)October 22, 2017 • 29th Sunday in Ordinary Timeas they asked Jesus their question and then as they heard his answer. Have the children show how Jesus felt and acted as he listened to the Pharisees and answered them. Have the children do the whole story in groups of three.Connecting Gospel and Doctrine(page 4) Read together “The Eighth Commandment.” Tell the children that Jesus called himself “the way andthe truth and the life” (John 14:6, italics added). Jesus asks us to value the truth and be honest. Skip the activity for now.Distribute the children’s What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks.Live the GospelObjective The children will learn about and explore the Eighth Commandment.Activity l You Shall Not Lie (page 4) In the story, Kevin told a lie rather than deal with his own feelings abouthis friends. The habit of lying is very destructive to the human community. Your classroom is an excellent place for the children to practice honesty and learn that even when it is painful, it is necessary for them to live together in peace and trust.Read the introduction to the activity aloud and do one or two of the sentences together. Then give the children time to read the rest of the sentences and make their judgments individually. Make the consequences of the lies the focus of your discussion.Closing Prayer Gather in a prayer circle. Ask the children for whom and what they wish to pray. Conclude with the family prayer of the Church, the Lord’s Prayer.Bring your prayer and gathering to a close by singing “CHOICES” (CD-1, #16).Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families and to do the Family Corner activities and prayer together.Lesson Wrap-UpThe NEW Gospel WeekliesThe NEW Gospel WeekliesPFLAUM GOSPEL WEEKLIES Faith Formation ProgramPFLAUM GOSPEL WEEKLIES Faith Formation ProgramThe children in your Good News class may be preparing for First Reconciliation or may recently have received it. Review with them the Ten Commandments (page 31) and what they learned about sin, turning away from God, and God’s will for us. Use this page as you need to prompt their understanding of how they can damage and mend their relationship with God and with each other.Use the four paragraphs on sin to help the children review their understanding in this area. When we sin, we often feel we are choosing a good. This is especially true of children, whose ability to reason is still developing. Be sure they know that God understands when we choose selfishly or out of fear or ignorance.Catechesis on First Reconciliation concentrates on building habits of loving God and our neighbors and on choosing the good. Ask: What are some good habits you have developed? Some will be habits you have encouraged in them as members of this class—listening to others, not interrupting, sharing materials, paying attentionto directions, participating in prayer. Ask about health habits like eating breakfast or exercising, school habits like finishing assignments and checking answers, home habits like helping parents and playing peacefully with siblings. Conclude by reading the first paragraph about virtues.Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Good News, page 4.November 12, 201732nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Year AAnswer the following questions based on the lesson.1.
