Don’t worry if the children do not have a total grasp of it yet.Read aloud the instructions for the activity on page 4. Give the children time to ask questions and comment on ways to create an image of church. As the children begin their drawing and cutting, go around the room to help individuals. When they are ready for the church-building phase, help the children with like ideas find each other so they can work as a team.Closing Prayer Gather in a prayer circle. Ask the children to mention people or situations they would like to pray about. The children respond, “The whole Church prays for you.”Play and sing “Come and Follow Me” (CD-2, #14) to end your prayer and gathering.Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families and to do the Family Corner activities and prayer together.Lesson Wrap-UpOctober 8, 2017 • 27th Sunday in Ordinary TimeRemind the children that during his time on earth, Jesus taught in many ways—through his words, actions, stories, and miracles. Talk about how the Church continues the work of Jesus. Give the children two or three issues of your parish bulletin. Help them find examples of how your parish does the work of Jesus. If you have a priest or priests from foreign countriesin your parish or diocese, point out that these priestsare missionaries. They have come where you live to help Catholics celebrate the Eucharist and other sacraments. Point out their home countries on the world map. If a foreign priest serves your parish, invite him to talk to the children about his country, what it was like for him when he was their age, and when and how he decided to become a mission priest. Or send a thank-you card from your group to a mission priest serving in a parish in your diocese.Ask for a volunteer to serve as the model for a human body that you are about to draw. Have the volunteerlie down on a long piece of butcher paper. Outline the volunteer’s body. On the head, print Jesus.Have the children write their names on the body. Brainstorm names of everyone they know who belongs to the Body of Christ. Let them write the names of parents, godparents, family members, your pastor, the Pope, friends, neighbors—anyone they can think of who is Catholic.Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Good News, page 4.Live the GospelObjective The children will create representations of the Church.Activity l Building the Church (page 4) This activity reinforces the children’s experience of being part of a community called the Church.
