    The Legend of Saint Valentine
According to an old legend, Saint Valentine was a Roman priest who was martyred in the year 269. He was killed because the emperor was persecuting Christians.
While he was in prison awaiting execution, Saint Valentine sent messages of love and friendship to his followers. His messages became known as valentines. The legend tells us that Valentine was beheaded on February 14. On that day, people still send valentines to those they love.
