Praise and CelebrateMatrimonyIn a marriage covenant, or agreement, a man and a woman form an intimate union of life and love. This covenant was founded by God for the good of the couple and for the rearing and education of their children.Marriage between the baptized was raised to the level of a sacrament by Christ to signify, or show, the union of Christ and the Church. The Sacrament of Matrimony gives the couple the grace to love each other with the love Christ has for the Church. In the Sacrament of Matrimony, the couple receives grace that:• Perfects the human love of the spouses • Strengthens their unity• Sancti es them on their way to eternallife with GodThe celebration of marriage between two Catholics normally takes place duringMass. The spouses confer the sacrament on each other by expressing their consent, that is, their willingness to give themselves to each other. The priest or deacon who assists at the celebration receives the consent of the spouses in the name of the Church and gives the blessing of the Church. Witnesses are present to verify the exchange of consent by the couple. The presence of the o cial witnesses as well as of witnesses who are friends and family protects the couple’s “I do” and helps them to remain faithful to it.The Christian home that is established by the couple will be the place where their children rst learn about the faith. The family home, where members form a community of grace and prayer and practice virtue and charity, is called the domestic church.Photo credit: Philippe Noisette/CIRIC26
