October 8, 2017 • 27th Sunday in Ordinary TimeSunday Readings: Isaiah 5:1–7; Philippians 4:6–9; Matthew 21:33–43For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundThis Sunday finds Jesus again using a parable to get across an important point. A parable works like a mirror. It describes characters in which we may see ourselves. It describes decisions people have to make that may be like decisions we make. When we hear a parable, we may recognize ourselves in the story. Sunday’s parable takes place in a vineyard, an Old Testament metaphor for the people of Israel. A landowner plantsa vineyard and hires tenants. When harvest time comes, the tenants kill his servants rather than give the owner his share; they kill his son when he comes to claim the owner’s share of the harvest. Jesus wants the chief priests and elders to take their own advice and become tenants who fruitfully care for God’s people.Matthew identifies Jesus as the cornerstone of new and fruitful Christian community. After the Romans destroy the Temple in a.d. 70, Jewish Christians and Jews who follow other rabbis began to grow apart into the two world religions we know today—Judaism and Christianity. This Gospel should not be used as a reason to persecute Jews today.Connecting Scripture and Doctrine“Jesus’ invitation to enter his kingdom comes in the form of parables, a characteristic feature of his teaching. Through his parables he invites people to the feast of the kingdom, but he also asks for a radical choice: to gain the kingdom, one must give everything. Words are not enough; deeds are required” (CCC, 546).
