October 22, 2017 • 29th Sunday in Ordinary TimeSunday Readings: Isaiah 45:1, 4–6; 1 Thessalonians 1:1–5b; Matthew 22:15–21For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundIn Sunday’s Gospel, a Pharisee confronts Jesus with a trick question. The Pharisees want to trap Jesus into taking sides on the controversial question of paying Roman taxes. Jesus turns the table by asking his own question, revealing the insincerity of the Pharisee’s query. Jesus’ answer, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s,” calls them and us to obey both civil and religious laws, pointing out that both God and our human world have claims on us. We are to examine our allegiances when the two con ict.Connecting Scripture and Doctrine“It is the duty of citizens to contribute along with the civil authorities to the good of society in a spirit of truth, justice, solidarity, and freedom” (CCC, 2239). See also CCC, 2255.“Submission to authority and co-responsibility for the common good make it morally obligatory to pay taxes, to exercise the right to vote, and to defend one’s country” (CCC, 2240).“Truth or truthfulness is the virtue which consists in showing oneself true in deeds and truthful in words, and in guarding against duplicity, dissimulation, and hypocrisy” (CCC, 2505).
