Early Start Lesson 3 We Pray TogetherBuilding CommunityOverviewThe online lessons have three goals: to help the children become comfortable with you and with each other; to lead them to see the Gospel as the core of the Venture lesson; and to introduce and practice a variety of prayer forms. In this lesson they will learn a way to pray with the Gospels in a simple, meditative way.Share ExperiencesOpening Prayer: Gather in the prayer area and light an incense stick. Tell the children you will pray a psalm together to begin class. A psalmis a prayer poem from the Old Testament. Ask when we pray psalms together. We pray the Responsorial Psalm after the first reading at Mass. Usually the reader reads a verse from a psalm and we respond with an antiphon. Write the word antiphon on the board or newsprint. Explain to the children that an antiphon is a part of the psalm that is repeated after the verses of a psalm. Read the antiphon for Psalm 141 below and have the children practice saying it. Then pray together.Antiphon: May our prayer rise up like incense before you. (Children repeat antiphon.)Verse: To you I call, Loving God; hurry to help me. Antiphon: May our prayer rise up like incense before you.Verse: Listen to my voice as I call upon you. Antiphon: May our prayer rise up like incense before you.Verse: I turn my eyes toward you, Loving God. Antiphon: May our prayer rise up like incense before you.Ask the children to take a moment of silent prayer to send their prayers to God just as the incense stick is sending its aroma to them. After a moment, continue with a discussion about friends.Materialsl Copies of the “Praying with the Gospels” activity page l An incense stick (or a candle)l Crayons, markers, or colored pencilsl Scissorsl TapeFriendship: Ask the children to think about their best friends. How did they meet and get to know each other? Let volunteers give one sentence descriptions of how their friendship happened. Point out that everyone’s story includes taking the risk to greet the child who would become a friend and then sharing activities, feelings, and good and bad times together.Tell the children that as the year progresses, they will become friends through the faith they share in Jesus. They will follow Jesus together. As they get to know one another, they will be able to share what is important to them, and they willbe able to count on one another for support and acceptance. They will be able to trust one another and help one another grow in faith. The Venture lesson for the 25th Sunday of Ordinary Time has an activity that helps the children set goals to make their classroom a welcoming and friendly place. This discussion today is a preparation for the discussion of creating a good classroom together in that lesson.Discover Gospel and DoctrineThis part of a Venture lesson is dedicated to hearing the Sunday Gospel story. Because these online lessons can be used on any Sunday, the Sunday Gospels are not part of the lessons.Early Start 3: We Pray Together©2017PflaumPublishingGroup,adivisionofBayard,Inc.
