Print the word JESUS on the chalkboard or on a sheet of newsprint, pausing after each letter so the children can call out the letter. Teach them these words to the tune of “B-I-N-G-O Is His Name.”God the Father has a Son and Jesus is his name. J-E-S-U-S. J-E-S-U-S. J-E-S-U-S.and Jesus is his name. When the children become comfortable with the words and melody, let them clap on the letters of J-E-S-U-S. Sing the song as you move to the work area.Live the GospelActivity:AChainofJesus’Followers Distribute the “A Chain of Jesus’ Followers’ activity page. Read the instructions at the top of the page with the children. Notice which children are fluent and which are not reading much yet. You will need to be alert to this difference among the children in your class. Distribute the baskets of crayons and scissors and go around the room as the children complete their task. Help each child to tape his or her two strips together, coloring and word side out, to facilitate the creation of the class chain during the prayer. The Our Father Have the children leave their chain links at their work places and come tothe prayer circle with the rest of the Activity Page. Ask the children what part of the Mass they like best. Many will mention The Lord’s Prayer or the Sign of Peace because both require participation. If your parish has the custom of joining hands during The Lord’s Prayer, ask the children why this happens. They may or may not know the significance of this prayer as the family prayer of God’s children.Review The Lord’s Prayer with the children. Have them repeat it after you, phrase by phrase. Give them a chance to ask questions aboutOnline Early Start Lesson 2vocabulary—art, Kingdom, hallowed, trespass. Help them see that The Lord’s Prayer is a family prayer. We say “our,” not “my.” We are one family, brothers and sisters in Christ. You may want to add simple gestures for children to performas they repeat each phrase. Plan to use The Lord’s Prayer often as part of your beginning or concluding prayer.Closing Prayer: Have the children go to the work area to pick up their chain links and return to the prayer circle. Have tape ready. Celebrate the prayer service. After the song, lead the children in giving a sign of peace.Early Start 2: We Gather Together©2017PflaumPublishingGroup,adivisionofBayard,Inc.
