Early Start Lesson 1We Meet Jesus in the GospelsFriends of JesusOverviewWelcome to the Promise program. This lesson assumes you are meeting the children in your Promise class for the first time. You will introduce the children to the pattern of a Promise lesson.Have fun getting to know the children and helping them become comfortable with one another and with you. Let them know you look forward to gathering with them to learn more about Jesus, to celebrate as a community, and to become better friends of Jesus and of one another.Share ExperiencesThe children in your Promise class will be ableto learn and share if they feel accepted. Make a practice of calling each child by name and inviting the children to do the same with one another. Create nametags for the children to wear. As the children come into the room, welcome them warmly and lead them to the work area. Give each child a nametag and print his or her first name on it. Have crayons, markers or colored pencils ready so the early arrivals can color their nametags while others are still coming in. Having a simple task to do will help calm any uneasiness about being in a new situation. Circulate around the room getting to know the children as they work. Use double-sided tape to stick the nametags onto the children’s clothing.Make a Prayer and Gospel Space: In a small box, place a piece of colorful cloth, beautiful items from nature, and a children’s Bible. The children can take turns each week, using the contents to set up a prayer center. You can use a small table or a shelf at their level. If this is not an option, simply have the child empty the box, turn it over, and cover it with the cloth. You will gather in this area during your Promise lesson for prayer andto proclaim the Gospel. Structure gives young children a framework in which to function and the routine helps them feel comfortable.Materialsl Copiesofthe“AStoryAboutJesus”activitypage l Crayons, markers, colored pencils, scissorsl Nametagsl A small balll Promise/Good News Music CD and CD playerOpening Prayer: Call the children to the prayer area. Ask them to sit in a circle. Tell the children that you are happy they are here. You want to ask God to bless everyone and make this Promise class a happy time. Pray the following prayer or one of your own.Loving God, thank you for bringing all these children together today. Please bless us as we learn together about Jesus. Help us be good friends to each other. We ask this in Jesus’ name. The children respond, “Amen.”Name Game: Have the children move to an open area in your room. Ask the children to sit in a circle again. Explain how to play the Name Game. Hold a ball and say, “My name is Mrs. Moore andI like to go shopping.” Roll the ball to one of the children. The child picks up the ball and says, “Her name is Mrs. Moore. My name is Danielle and I like pizza.” Danielle rolls the ball to another child, who picks up the ball and says, “Her name is Danielle. My name is and I like .” The last child rolls the ball back to you. You can play another round with the children in which they tell something they did during the summer.Early Start 1: We Meet Jesus in the Gospels©2017PflaumPublishingGroup,adivisionofBayard,Inc.
