3. Some scholars spend their lives studying complicated subjects such as nuclear physics, theoretical mathematics, and the origin of the universe. Still others, people of faith, devote themselves to an even more complicated subject—God. They explore God’s revelation so that they, and we, can come to know and understand God better. Hint: The rst four letters of this faith word are from the Greek word for God, and the last four are from the Greek for science or study.

The rst book is carried in the procession of the priest and other ministers into the church. It contains all the Scripture readings needed: the First Reading, most often from the Old Testament; the Second Reading, most often a letter from Saint Paul; a psalm; and the Gospel.

6. Some hosts consecrated in the Mass are kept in reserve for sick people who are homebound, in hospitals, and nursing homes; for exposition of the Blessed Sacrament; and for Benediction. The name for the place where these objects are reserved comes from a Latin word that means “tent.” This is a reminder of the sacred tent where the Jews, during their wanderings in the desert, kept a most sacred gift from God to humanity–– the tablets of the commandments given by God to Moses. In the “tent” in our churches, we keep the most precious of all the gifts God has given to humanity— Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
