4. The place in the celebration of the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation during which the priest prayerfully proclaims that the penitent’s sins are forgiven. The priest speaks in the name of Jesus Christ, who, through the Holy Spirit, has given the priest the power to forgive sins. He prays: “May God give you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

5. A metal bowl with a perforated lid that contains burning charcoal on which fragrant incense is scattered. The bowl is suspended on long chains. The church minister can use the chains to raise and lower the
lid and to swing the bowl while incensing the altar, the other church ministers, and the assembly. The perfumed smoke rising heavenward is a symbol of our prayers rising to God.

6. A member of the clergy, but not a priest, who assists the priest with his duties and performs other works of service. There are two kinds of these clerics. One is called transitional because he will eventually be ordained to the priesthood. The other is said to be permanent because he will not become a priest. His ministry is permanently dedicated to helping the parish priest and performing other works of service.
These ministers may baptize, distribute Holy Communion, proclaim the Gospel, preach during the liturgy, and preside at weddings and funerals when there is no Mass. Neither type may say Mass.
