John 20:19–23

“Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” –John 20:21

A lot of “sending” goes on in the story of Jesus. First, Jesus is sent by his Father to become part of the world. Then Jesus sends his disciples (the word apostles literally means “the sent”) to bring Good News to every corner of the earth. Finally, as Jesus returns to his Father, he sends the Holy Spirit to remain with his Church until the end of time. One thing is clear: no one is standing around in the Gospel with nothing to do.

We, too, are among the sent. We’re sent to bring consolation to those who are sad, material assistance to those in need, justice to the oppressed, healing to the sick, knowledge to the ignorant, and hope to the despairing. The Holy Spirit remains our guiding light, leading us on our mission to promote the common good. Since the time of Jesus, divine help always arrives with a human face. Let it be yours.

Who has been sent into your life to bring good tidings over the years?

To whom have you been especially sent?

LET US PRAY… Spirit of Holiness, you bring the fire of your seven-fold gifts to enflame our hearts with wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel, courage, reverence, and awe in the presence of what’s sacred. Pour these gifts upon your Church today that we may be beacons of light in the world’s darkness. Amen.

While The Gospel at Home takes a break in the summer months, we’ll be drawing our weekly reflections from Exploring the Sunday Readings.
