On Saturday, September 29, the Church celebrates the Feast of Saints Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel—the three archangels noted by name in the Bible. The prefix arch means “leader” or “chief.” In the Book of Revelation, the archangel Michael leads God’s armies against Satan. Raphael heals Tobit of his blindness and guides his son Tobias safely to marriage with Sarah. Gabriel announces to Mary that she carries the Son of God. Angels serve God as messengers; the word angel comes from the Latin word angelus, which means “one who announces.” The Angelus—a devotion that is prayed daily at 6 a.m., noon, and 6 p.m.—is usually accompanied by the ringing of bells. It calls all Catholics to pray and draw closer to Mary and to Jesus. At the Vatican, each Sunday at noon, Pope Francis addresses the crowds, prays the Angelus, and offers a blessing.
