This week across North America, proud citizens celebrate Canada Day (July 1) and Independence Day (July 4). Canada Day commemorates the anniversary of the Constitution Act (originally the British North America Act) in which the three colonies of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick united to become known as Canada. Independence Day (also known as the Fourth of July) celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in which the 13 colonies banded together, formally separated from the United Kingdom, and established themselves as the United States of America. This week, take time to celebrate, attend special Masses, and pray for these nations—a Prayer for Canada Day and these prayers for the United States, which originally appeared in Catholic Digest magazine.
