Mark 3:20–35

When his relatives heard of this they set out to seize him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.” –Mark 3:21

His own family thought he was crazy! That’s what the Gospel of Mark says. It was such a disturbing observation that Matthew and Luke, the two writers who often copy Mark’s material almost exactly, omit this saying when they describe the scene. While John’s Gospel repeats the allegation that Jesus was considered crazy, the phrase is put into the mouths of the crowds, and not his relatives (see John 10:20).

But when you think about it, isn’t this entirely likely? Don’t we all view the choices our loved ones are making with disbelief and a questioning of their sanity? Why is she marrying him? What would possess him to move to that part of the country? They must be nuts to purchase that property. Raising their kids that way just proves how loony the two of them are.

Moral support from our families is something we all crave. But it can’t be the gold standard by which we live and breathe and make decisions. Sometimes, we have to follow the mad way our hearts direct us, no matter what they say about us.

  • When did you do something against the advice of those around you?
  • Would you do it again?

LET US PRAY…

Holy are your ways, O Lord, and holy are the people whom you choose and call to yourself. Soften our hearts so that we may see the world as you see it, and that we may respond with care to the Creation you so love. Make us better stewards of this garden. Amen.

While The Gospel at Home takes a break in the summer months, we’ll be drawing our weekly reflections from Exploring the Sunday Readings.
